Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners in Primary Health Care - A Guide for General Practice

In recognising the leadership characteristics of our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners, their comprehensive clinical skills, and invaluable cultural knowledge - we know the benefits our Workforce bring to all health care settings. Across Australia, they are already vital members of multidisciplinary health teams in the public health system, the community-controlled sector, and while they are employed in a small but growing number of general practices, this remains a critical area for further investment.

NAATSIHWP has thus developed this guide to support general practices understand the benefits of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners, and promote the effective utilisation of our Workforce members into their models of care.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) endorsed guide provides:

  • information on the role, skills and qualifications of our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners,
  • suggests how general practices can enhance their high quality clinical care through their provision of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Checks, GP Management Plans, Team Care Arrangements, and follow-up care, and
  • insights on how to nurture and retain our Workforce members in culturally safe general practices.

Launched at the RACGP Practice Owners Conference 2025, we hope the guide enhances the quality and accessibility of culturally safe health care being offered by general practices, and contributes to sustainable and cost-effective ways of improving health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
